Threshold

Do I have to register for VAT?

Since 2025 the threshold is counted per calendar year, not over any 12 months. Past €50,000 you must register, but while the year's total stays within €55,000 the registration may wait until 1 January of the following year.

The count includes taxable supplies and some exempt ones: financial and insurance services and property transactions. If the threshold was exceeded in the previous calendar year, registration is compulsory.

You may register earlier

If your customers are VAT payers themselves, your VAT is their input tax and the price is effectively unchanged, while you recover VAT on your own purchases. If your customers are consumers, VAT raises the price they see by 21%.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 21% VAT on an amount?

If you know the amount before VAT, multiply it by 0.21. On 100 euro excluding VAT: 100 × 0.21 = 21 euro of VAT, and 121 euro in total. If you know the total including VAT and need the VAT inside it, divide by 1.21 to get the net. 121 ÷ 1.21 = 100 euro net, so the VAT is 21 euro.

How do I get the net amount from a total that includes VAT?

Divide by 1.21 when the rate is 21%. A total of 19.99 euro is 16.52 net and 3.47 VAT. Do not calculate the VAT separately by multiplying the gross by 0.21: the net and the VAT can then differ from the actual total by a cent. This calculator derives the VAT as the total minus the net, so the three figures always reconcile.

What VAT rates apply in Latvia?

Latvia has four rates: the standard 21%, reduced rates of 12% and 5%, and 0%. The standard 21% covers most goods and services. The 12% rate covers medicines and medical devices, infant food, fresh fruit, berries and vegetables characteristic of Latvia, public transport and heating supplied to households, and from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 also bread, milk, fresh poultry meat and eggs. The 5% rate covers books and periodicals published in Latvian, Latgalian or Livonian, or in an official language of an EU, EEA, EU candidate or OECD country. The 0% rate covers exports and intra-EU supplies to a VAT-registered buyer. Always confirm the rate for a specific product with VID, as the conditions are detailed.

At what turnover must I register for VAT in Latvia?

Since 2025 the threshold is counted per calendar year. Once your supplies in the current year exceed €50,000, you must register for VAT. If the year's total stays within €55,000, the registration may wait until 1 January of the following year. Above €55,000 you must register at once, and VAT is due from the supply that took you past that figure. The count includes taxable supplies and some exempt ones, such as financial and insurance services and property transactions. You may also register voluntarily before reaching the threshold, which is often worthwhile when your customers are themselves VAT payers and your own purchases carry a lot of input VAT.

Is voluntary VAT registration worth it?

It depends who your customers are. If they are businesses registered for VAT, they deduct your VAT as input tax, so your price to them is effectively unchanged while you recover the VAT on your own purchases. If your customers are consumers, VAT raises the price they see by 21%, which is a real competitive disadvantage. This calculator shows both figures so you can compare the difference.

Does VAT have to be shown separately on an invoice?

Yes. A VAT invoice must show the amount excluding VAT, the rate, the VAT amount and the total including VAT. Where an invoice carries several rates, the VAT has to be broken out per rate. erekini.eu fills this in automatically and checks that the VAT matches the lines before you issue the invoice.
